Based on Rappler.com, the Toyota Hilux Class 1 modern PUV manufactured for the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program. The airconditioned, 12 seater, Euro 4-powered vehicle has CCTV, GPS, and wifi, and is also PWD-friendly.The Pblic Utility Vehicle Modernization Program was launched by the Department of Transportation of the Philippines in 2017, with the goal of making the country's public transportation system efficient and environment friendly in 2020.

It's obvious that the netizens didn't like the said modernization of jeepnys here in the Philippines. According to @aguayow it is better to use the old jeepney rather than that so called modern jeepneys.

Is it really modernization or it is just an innovation?There is a difference between modernization and innovation. Modernization is the process of adapting something to modern needs or habits, while innovation is an action or process of innovating. L300 has similar design for passengers that makes better use of the vehicle's length. And has been existing since the 1990's so where is the modernization? they just add wifi and cctv for innovation.
When we say "modernization" we are not talking about the "most recent" or the "newest" version of something? those vehicles don't look recent or new. They look "sinauna."
It is not going to be eco-friendly since it is still empowered by gas (or diesel). Likewise, it is not comparable to the ones running on streets now which are activated by electricity. The price as well isn't competitive.
Here is the example of a jeep with 12 seater passenger. Where is the modernization here if capacity of 12 seats passenger did not expand?
This PUV modernization program preposition is just so "mema." Imagine that Nissan Urvan seats 15 people. A jeepney seats 18-24 people, a bus seats at least 42 people. All these can have a CCTV, GPS, wifi, and PWD- friendly.

Lesser capacity would mean more vehicles like this would be needed to accommodate the riding public will occupy lots of space on the road. Also, lesser capacity of such expensive PUV would only mean higher fare. It's like they're not even hiding the blatant corruption with how overpriced these are.
Unsafe and inefficient. Truly shows that they do not know the difficluty in commuting.

ReplyDeleteThis is so true. We can't really say "look, everything seems so modernized nowadays." that todays generation Z is very fortunate to live in an "easy come easy go" advanced world. Here in the Philippines, Filipinos always have that kind of thinking, without knowing the reality. Some of them doesn't even know how innovation differs from the word invention. But still, innovation plays a big role for modernization.

ReplyDeleteSome people nowadays misinterpret innovation. It seems like being modern is a trend. Modernized puv is really convenient but arent the government wasting money for this? To think that they had spent too much for providing ac, gps and wifi but the seating capacity is still not improving. Though it is convenient to have these advantages but arent these things already accessible? Gps and wifi can be in anyone's phone. Some jeeps today already has their own seats for pwd and cctv. I think it would be better for them to spend their money in much useful things rather than wasting it just to look modern.

ReplyDeleteI have to agree with you, this so called "modernization" is a big NO. First, its price. I think they didn't even bother to check the income of an average jeepney driver. The maintenance of this model is obviously more expensive than the rest of jeepneys. Second, the WiFi. Sizt, for real? Is it necessary? Anyone can avail a 15 peso worth of load with 100mb data if they badly need it. Third, the design. My gosh, I hate it. Not because it looks like a brgy. patrol or anything but because they just took one of the remarkable things in the Philippines. We all know that jeepneys are known around the world because of its simple yet unique and practical design. Foreigners don't even miss the jeep experience here. So, why not do a modernized design that'll cater more people without changing the original design or idea? What about a double deck one? This will also help ease the traffic :))
